250...an evocative number in the history of Ferrari and all for good reason. Its success is based on the excellent 3L V12 engine designed by Gioacchino Colombo that revealed great versatility. With strong results in racing from 1952 on, the 250 road versions would not disappoint either. In 1960, the 250 PF coupe gave way to a new version, the 250GTE, also bodied by Pinin Farina, and Ferrari's first four seater. To accomplish this, Ferrari had to push the engine forwards by 20cm and to create a more slender top. Officially introduced at the 1964 Paris Motor Show in October, the car was very successful and reached a production rate of nearly a thousand copies until 1964, contributing to Ferrari's worldwide reputation.
The example presented is a rare first series, limited to only 299 units. Its chassis number is 2339 and it is special as it is the car that is represented on some period brochures. It was sold new to the US and was still there in August 1984 when it won third prize in the International Ferrari Concours, while in the hands of D. Kinnaird. A description of the car during its sale mentions that it had just two owners in the US before being imported into Europe in the mid-1990s. In 2003, the car was restored in Italy and the current owner acquired it in the Netherlands. The bodywork is sound and the grey paintwork in good condition with the exception of a few minor blemishes, and the alignments and door openings are good. An inspection report from 2018 mentions signs of an older repair in the front wheel arch. Inside, the red leather upholstery with matching carpets has been restored to a high standard, the dashboard is complete and features a period Becker Avus radio. The engine, matching numbers, runs well and tyres display only minor wear. This is a lovely example of the first series, in an elegant colour scheme, presenting the homogenous patina of an older restoration. Following a general check, its new owner will have the unique pleasure of slipping behind the thin Nardi steering wheel and waking up the melodious V12 for long rides.
