Description

The 250 SWB was one of Italy’s most successful GT racers of the early 1960s with a GT class win in 1961. It also went on to win the 1960, 1961 and 1962 Tour de France Automobile Race. Today these cars remain enormously desirable with original cars fetching in excess of seven million pounds.

With such a desirable marque as the 250 SWB it was inevitable that several companies would seek to produce their own interpretation of the 1960s iconic shape. One such company Tribute Automotive offered a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) kit which would fit a BMW Z3 Roadster with minimal modifications. The BMW Z3 offered a perfect donor not only because of its physical dimensions but also its performance that didn’t fall far short of the original car with a 0-60 time of sub 6 secs and onto a top speed of 150mph.

The 1960s Italian 250 SWB Tribute offered here at Autostorico is based on the underpinnings of a BMW Z3 3.0 Manual Roadster registered in 2000. Finished in Azzurro California Blue with Black leather interior trim. The conversion project was undertaken by an engineer who had always admired and dreamt of owning a 1960s GT car. Works started with reshaping the body panels including fitting a new Bonnet, Boot lid, Wings and reworked Roof before painting. The car also underwent a mechanical overhaul and rewire to accommodate the new dashboard layout with Veglia style instruments. Other notable works included fitting period front grille and driving lamps, period door handles. finally new wire wheels were fitted with traditional knock off spinners. Specification highlights also include; Air conditioning, Electric windows and Nardi steering wheel.

It is not a replica in the traditional sense. It is a means of transmitting visual pleasure with supreme practicality, whilst being fun, agile and provides the same visual triggers as the original.

Viewing strictly by appointment only.
