Chassis No. 911.560.0011, Rare Porsche Preproduction, Test and Development Car:
This Particular Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI has had many enthusiasts and historians scratching their heads for the past few years, and it certainly piqued my curiosity meter when I first encountered it. How it came to be and more interestingly how it survived is quite a fascinating story. If you love Porsche oddities, you are in for a real treat, as this one is certainly a unique piece of Porsche history.

First off, I want to give an extreme thanks to noted historian, Ryan Snodgrass who’s definitive tome on these vehicles, CARRERA 2.7 provided impossibly perfect assistance with the research and understanding of this Porsche and why it was so different than the others. If you have any interest in these rare machines, getting a copy of his book is an absolute must!

Several recent formal and informal inquiries to the Porsche Factory to learn more about this Carrera 2.7 MFI provided a very mixed set of responses. A few clear facts were known, specifically that it was assembled in June of 1974 using the first production body for the 1975 model year. It carries the body or more properly the “Konstruktion” number 105.0001. This simply translates to a type 911 Coupé body for model year 1975 and sequentially the first car built. The car’s assigned chassis number is 911.560.0011. Obviously the first three numbers are the model type. The “560” indicates it is a Carrera 2.7 MFI and the final four would make one assume it was car number 11 out of the production run total. Normally a chassis number list for these vehicles shows chassis numbers in the range from 911.560.0001 to 911.560.0518. An actual examination of Porsche production records always indicates that the first chassis number used in each model run starts at 0011 and on at least one occasion .0010. Porsche’s normal practice was not to use the first ten chassis numbers in any production run. Therefore this particular Carrera 2.7 MFI is the first of 508 examples completed.

Since this car resurfaced several years ago, there have been many attempts to learn is early and rather unique history. Highly respected racer and former Porsche historian and archivist, Jürgen Barth was rumored to be a former owner of the car and he wrote in April of 2015 that after checking the Porsche archives that he found the following information:

During this same time frame, former owner, Clay Huber applied for and received a rather odd and obviously incomplete COA (Certificate of Authenticity) as shown in the photo gallery.

More recent inquires with Porsche have provided continuing additional information and details. My initial inquiry came back with a reply that stated the car was a test and development car as noted by Barth but that it was possibly scrapped or intended to be scrapped in January of 1975. This translates to this Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 with body/chassis/engine/gearbox type and numbers was built in June 1974 as a test vehicle in light yellow with black vinyl interior and Pirelli tires and that it was possibly scrapped in January of 1975 but not scrapped and instead sold to a Mr. Geppart. The car was a test vehicle for a special injection system and also for body work, likely the newly developed option code M473 which consisted of the new “Whale Tail” spoiler in conjunction with a front fiberglass air-dam spoiler and rubber lip.

Most recently I received far more complete and detailed information from the Porsche archives. This is what I was provided:

There appears to be three minor errors from the information above with what we actually know about the car, likely due from the fact that these notes were transcribed from the original hand written records Porsche holds for this particular example. The gearbox number is actually “7345398” and not “7345308.” This is likely just an error in reading the original hand written notes. Same for the gearbox type, which is noted above as “911/06” when it is actually “915/06.” Likely again just a typo as Porsche never built a Type 911/06 gearbox. The interior color is actually “Midnight Black” and not "Midnight Blue” and this again is likely just a recording error in transcribing the old records.

Adding all of the information from Jürgen Barth, the COA and two sets of records from Porsche, we now have an excellent understanding of how this car came to be and appeared in the early Summer of 1974.

The car today remains fitted with both the original engine and gearbox as recorded on Porsche’s own internal records. The engine is a very special “Works or Race Department” prepared typ. 911/83 engine with engine number “664.1375.” This engine number decodes as follows:

This engine would have been built sometime in June of 1974, the same time frame that this Porsche was completed and therefore not only matches Porsche’s assembly records but also was built in the same time frame as the car itself. This engine is very clearly a specially prepared unit not built on the production line as the engine type number “911/83” is stamped in large font stamps of the same type as the engine number. This practice took place in the race or special engine department only. The production line engines had their type number stamped at time of assembly with small fonts and later when the engine was assigned to a car, the engine number was stamped using large fonts. The bottom side of the engine also has the distinct “K” stamping which is believed to stand for “Kiene” or “none” for none conforming. The “K” stamping might also be a reference to the fact that this car initially was fitted with an an experimental Bosch K-Jetronic injection system that Porsche tested and evaluated but did not use in the regular production version of the car.

The gearbox fitted to this car also matches the original assembly records for this Porsche. It is a typ. 915/06 unit specifically made for the 1974-1976 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI vehicle line. It was assembled in June of 1974 at the same time the car was constructed. The gearbox number breaks down as follows:

In addition to the specially prepared engine, this Porsche still retains a variety of un-identified components, likely also used during Porsche’s testing and development program. The engine compartment has an extremely interesting bracket with a vacuum canister and associated plumbing that attaches to nothing. We know from the Porsche records that the car was fitted with an experimental Bosch K-Jetronic injection system. Perhaps this part and the associated plumbing have something to do with the experimental fuel injection system. It apparently remained in the car even after it was fitted with the normal Bosch Mechanical Injection system.

Under the car are an extra series of conduits and tubing that pass to the front of the car under the passenger floor boards. Their purpose is a complete mystery but they are also likely the remnants of Porsche’s testing equipment fitted to this car when new. Likewise the front trunk compartment has some very strange panel formation with numerous hand divotted areas as will be showing the photo gallery later.

A possible indication that Porsche had no intention of this car ever being released to the public lies in the fact that little effort was taken to remove these components which would have been completely non-conforming and likely not legal on a production road car.

Chassis No. 911.560.0011 After Completion:
We now know what this Porsche looked like in the early Summer of 1974 and what it was doing. It was an internal Porsche Factory test and development car in light yellow with the newly designed front and rear spoilers and an experimental Bosch K-Jetronic injection system. We also know that Porsche retained this vehicle for internal test and development work for seven to eight months before it was deemed surplus to their needs. What happened next is a bit of a mystery.

The very well known German Porsche dealer Freisinger Motorsports owned and sold this Porsche on at least three occasions. Despite repeated inquires, they have been very closed-lip about sharing any additional details. Somehow however either via Freisinger or direct from Porsche this vehicle ended up being sold to a Mr. Geppert or possibly Geppart in Germany.

Despite many attempts, no one has been able to make contact or learn anything more of Mr. Geppert/Geppart. What is known for sure is that in 1991, the car was reacquired by Freisinger and then sold and exported to Japan where it would remain until October of 2013 when it was once again purchased by Freisinger and this time sold to a new owner here in the States. Despite not being willing to share many details, clearly Freisinger knew the car well and worked hard to buy and sell it on at least three and likely four occasions.

While in Japan, this Porsche was color changed from the original light yellow to Grand Prix white. A passenger side review mirror was also fitted to make the car Japanese road registrable. Japanese front fender side marker lights were also added to the car during its stay in Japan.

This Porsche was first registered in Japan in September 1991. It was registered in Japan on Gunma Prefecture, Japan, Gunma plates “300 5979.”

Japanese DMV extract records records that on November 21st, 2005 the mileage was 19,700 kilometers (indicated but likely 119,700 kilometers from new.) The records further note that three years later on May 1st, 2008, the mileage was now recorded at 20,700 kilometers (again indicated but likely 120,700 kilometers from new.)

This Porsche was offered for sale in early 2012 and repurchased again by Freisinger MotorSports and shipped to Germany. It was then re-offered for sale and purchased by Don Ahearn of Porsport Motors and shipped to the States.

To facilitate new registration and import to the States, the car was formally imported by C. W. Coker Jr., of Bluffton, South Carolina. It arrived via ocean vessel on November 18th, 2013 at the Port of Charleston, SC. Total indicated mileage at time of arrival in the States was still recorded at 20,700 kilometers.

Ahearn then sold the car to Clay Huber, owner of Rosner Automotive Group in Virginia in June of 2014.

The current owner, purchased / traded with Rosner MotorSports / Rosner Volvo of Fredericksburg, Virginia on April 1st, 2015. The sale was done via a trade of his 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, s/n 911.360.0424. Actual agreed cost at time of purchase for this Carrera 2.7 MFI was $249,000 USD.

This Porsche was then shipped to new owner in San Diego on April 24th, 2015. Total mileage at time of purchase was 22,500 kilometers.

In July 2015, the engine was sent out for rebuild and overhaul by Scott Drnek’s Virtuoso Performance in Hayward, California with the injection system being completely gone through by Gus at Pacific Injection. The seats were also then fully refurbished and recovered as well as additional work at an expense of more than $35,000 USD. The car now shows 31,882 indicated kilometers but likely reflects 131,882 kilometers. There are however only just shy of 7,700 kilometers on the car since the complete rebuild of the drive train.
