When enthusiasts talk about Zagato’s greatest hits, the conversation almost always begins with the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato — a mythical unicorn car of which only 19 were built. Yet years before the British icon, the Milanese coachbuilder had already perfected many of the themes that would define its legend. This 1957 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sprint Zagato Lusso, one of just three ever built and the final Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeo 1900, represents the moment the carrozzeria evolved from crafting uncompromising lightweight racers into creating exquisitely tailored grand tourers. Its lower, cleaner lines, delicate Giulietta-inspired grille and unmistakable double-bubble roof introduced a design language that would later reach its zenith on the DB4 GT Zagato, making a compelling case that Zagato’s most beautiful creation may have worn an Alfa Romeo badge all along.

Coming to market from long-term enthusiast ownership, chassis AR1900C.10593 boasts a provenance every bit as captivating as its coachwork. Believed to have been briefly driven by Elio Zagato himself, it later became a prized exhibit in Peter Kaus’ legendary Rosso Bianco Collection, displayed alongside some of the most significant Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeos ever assembled. Since then, it has completed multiple editions of the 1000 Miglia, been treated to a concours-quality restoration that debuted at Pebble Beach’s Zagato Centenary celebration, and collected major concours honours along the way. 

As one of only three SSZ Lusso coupes ever produced — and the only example believed to feature a factory floor-shift gearbox — this elegant Alfa coming up for sale at Gooding Christie's Pebble Beach auction on 14 August for an estimated 1,250,000 - 1,750,000 US-dollars represents one of the rarest and most significant opportunities to acquire a pivotal chapter in Zagato history.
