After 3.6 million produced in a 15 year production run, the Fiat 500 was still not out of date when it finally went off the sales catalogue in 1973, which proved the intelligence of its concept and design. It was due to the brilliance of engineer Dante Giacosa, who had already proven his genius with the 500 Topolino launched in the 1930s. For the Nuova 500, Giacosa's objective was to produce a sufficiently economical car to attract first time users, preferably the baby boomers who were just coming off their scooters and on to cars. The little Fiat perfectly reached its objectives: it met the exact needs of young Italians during its launch in 1957 and the order books were full for years to come.
