It appears that the RM Sotheby’s Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato announcement last week was merely an appetiser before the main meal, as the auction house has consigned to its ‘Driven By Disruption’ sale the ex-Works Ferrari 290 MM in which Il Maestro, Juan Manuel Fangio, raced solo to fourth position in the 1956 Mille Miglia (an unusually soaked race which was, incidentally, won by Eugenio Castelotti in the sister car).
This striking Range Rover Convertible was modified by Special Vehicle Conversions Ltd, and fell into its former owner’s possession by virtue of a card game in the early 1990s. However, he had no space for such a car and stored it in a lock-up, where it would remain until 2014. In fact, it had been tucked up for so long that the owner actually forgot where he'd put it.
Supplied through Jo Siffert’s Swiss dealership, this 911 T was one of four 911s used by the production crew for ‘Le Mans’ – Steve McQueen’s seminal racing thriller that, ultimately, became one of the most troublesome and challenging endeavours of not just his career, but his life. McQueen and Elga Andersen’s short-lived affair during the film’s production was well documented by the tabloid media. We wonder if any frolics between the two took place in this very car?
The two rare right-hand-drive Ferraris – a 1967 275 GTB/4 and a 1960 250 GT SWB – were gifted to the RNLI in the will of Northamptonshire-based businessman Richard Colton, and sold by the British auction house H&H for an impressive £1.93m and £6.6m (hammer) respectively. The proceeds of the sale will go towards funding a new lifeboat, which will, appropriately, be named after Colton and his wife.

Delivering a scarcely believable 780HP (80% of which will be available from 2,500rpm), the new Ferrari F12tdf will accelerate from 0-62mph in 2.9sec and continue on to a top speed of 211mph. It features an innovative new rear-wheel steering system, similar to that found on the Porsche 991 GT3, which is said to virtually ‘shorten the car’s wheelbase’ and increase both stability and cornering speeds.
