2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren ‘Stirling Moss’

Fitted with a special aerodynamic body, C-type ‘XKC 011’ was driven by Moss at Le Mans in 1952, but failed to finish. Following the race it was returned to its traditional configuration, and subsequent results included a win at the September Goodwood Meeting, in the hands of WW2 Major Tony Rolt.

While it’s strange to see Lamborghini – the cornerstone of supercar madness – actually lowering a new car’s power (610HP down to 580HP), the new Huracán LP580-2 has been designed solely for rear-wheel driving fun, and should silence the critics who bemoaned the all-wheel-drive car’s lack of emotion. We really like the more aggressive new front and rear styling, and welcome the 33kg reduction in weight, thanks to the loss of the hefty all-wheel-drive system.

Piotr Degler travelled to Cuba, reasoning that there was nowhere else on earth with a streetscape unchanged since the 1950s, the result of a decades-long ban on importing new cars.
