What can we say about the top 10 most valuable cars sold at auction in 2018? Well, all but two (the Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato and the Alfa Romeo Tipo B) were sold Stateside, indicative of the USA’s increased two-thirds stronghold on the market. Collectively, they represent the ‘best of the best’, that tiny segment of the market that has, against the common grain, exceeded expectations in 2018 and not fallen by the wayside.

Nowadays, sports cars billed as ‘pure’ still tend to be stuffed with technology as mercilessly as the festive turkey is with stuffing. While true automotive icons such as the Porsche 356 and Aston Martin DB5 continue to enjoy great popularity, the triumphant advance of the ‘poster cars’ is also evident in the Classic Driver Market.

Compared to the brutal and imposing black bull that is the Lamborghini LM002, the Urus is a plump white polar bear, particularly here on Lago di Braies in the Dolomites, which has already frozen over for the winter. Even stood still, you can almost hear the so-called ‘Rambo Lambo’ grunting and pawing the ground in frustration. And don’t for a second think the intimidation will subside.
