RM Sotheby’s is selling these 100 dream cars with no reserve

Last weekend, an immaculate two-owner 2003 Ferrari Enzo sold for 2.64m US dollars in an online-only auction held by RM Sotheby’s.

The impressive sum, a record for a dedicated digital collector car sale, is indicative of two things: that amid the coronavirus crisis, established automotive auction houses such as RM have been able to shift successfully online without a marked drop in volume or quality, and that online sales are a viable and cost-effective alternative, on which more emphasis will no doubt be placed moving forward.

Open season at the Flüela Pass with a curve-hungry Alfa SZ

Snow still sits atop the Graubünden peaks, but at least the Flüela Pass is luring people with its fantastic views and dry, deserted sequences of curves – just the place to blast away the lockdown blues of the past few months. Together with his father, our photographer Andrea Klainguti was finally able to drive out the winter from his home in the Engadine. His car of choice? The latest addition to the family: a hot-blooded Alfa Romeo SZ.

RM Sotheby's - The European Sale featuring the Petitjean Collection

Description

RM Sotheby’s is excited to announce that its second annual Essen auction has been shifted to an Online Only sale, 3–11 June on rmsothebys.com. The majority of cars originally set for the physical live auction will be offered in the time-based online auction, comprised of approximately 200 fine collector cars ranging from an incredible pre-war Bugatti to an extremely rare Aston Martin V8 Zagato; as well as the nearly 100 sought-after cars presented from the single-owner Petitjean Collection, all offered without reserve.
RM Sotheby’s is confident that the Online Only auction format will continue to secure the best possible results for consignors and bidders and that this first Online Only European auction will continue the success realized by the recent North American online auctions.

The Petitjean Collection, offered entirely without reserve, is a unique single-owner collection of cars from across the decades consisting of nearly 100 incredibly diverse classics from the 1950s through to the ‘90s. Curated and lovingly built over the last 50 years by Monsieur Marcel Petitjean—an ex-competitive racing driver who entered events around Europe during the ‘60s and ‘70s—the Collection offers something for all tastes, featuring marques including Lamborghini, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche, among other exotic brands, through to more affordable classics. M. Petitjean, a classic car devotee based in Strasbourg, France, built the collection with the intention of creating a motor museum with a strong emphasis on grouping cars by both marque and by country of origin. Many of the cars present are rare models from every marque represented, with a large portion of the collection having been under M. Petitjean’s care for decades and remaining in highly original condition, having never been restored. The cars have been maintained in dry storage at the collection site though not driven in years and will require recommissioning for future road use. Every lot is offered without reserve, making the collection a tantalizing prospect for enthusiasts and prospective buyers.

At 240kph through Monaco with Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari SF90 Stradale

Claude Lelouch himself was behind the camera in Monaco last Sunday morning, directing Le Grand Rendez-vous – a modern interpretation of his classic short film C’etait un Rendez-Vous from 1976, which featured a high-speed dawn raid across Paris filmed from the bumper of a mystery car (actually a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL) but dubbed with the soul-stirring V12 soundtrack of a Ferrari 275 GTB.
