Inspired by the BMW Turbo concept car designed by Giugiaro and presented in 1972, the BMW M1 was the first to carry the famous " M " of BMW Motorsport. It was designed as a homologation special (in Group 4), under the direction of the competition department, run at that time by Jochen Neerspach. The car had a fibreglass body and a six-cylinder 3.5-litre mid-positioned engine derived from that of the CSL coups, with a 24-valve cylinder head and dry sump lubrication. Unveiled at the 1978 Paris Motor Show, it made its appearance as a top-level GT machine.
The extraordinary feature of the example on offer is that it is a ...one owner car ! It was bought new by a dental surgeon, from the Bever garage, the BMW dealership in Besanon, via the dealership in Nancy that had the authority to order an M1. The owner, a genuine sports car enthusiast, used it sparingly, keeping it on the road until 2006. The last MOT was valid until 2007 and today the odometer records just 68 584 km from new. This BMW M1 was probably repainted its stunning blue hue some years ago and appears to be in very well preserved condition, still retaining the original stickers. The interior is correct, and the fabric and leather upholstery displays an inimitable patina. The spare wheel appears never to have been used. With just 455 examples produced, the BMW M1 is a rare car. A one-owner example is even more so.
