One of the rarest BMW production cars ever built, the BMW M1 was built between 1979 and 1981 and a total of 399 road cars were constructed, with a further fifty-three competition prepared Group 4 ‘Procar’ variants built to compete in the famed Procar Championship, a support race for Formula One held for two seasons between 1979-80

Originally destined for production by Lamborghini in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, tensions began to rise early on in the programme between BMW and Lamborghini resulting in BMW cancelling the arrangement and taking charge of production themselves. The fibre glass bodywork of the M1 was manufactured by Italian firm ‘Italina Resina’ of Modena, the chassis was manufactured by another Modenese firm, Marchesi and the body of the car was completed by Italdesign at their facility in Turin along with the interior

The cars were then delivered to German specialist manufacturer Baur where final assembly took place by hand with the hand-built M88/1 engines supplied by BMW Motorsport division in Munich. Following the build, the completed cars were shipped to the Motorsport division in Munich for final inspection and delivery

Our car was constructed in 1979 and sold to the first owner Mr Franz Reuther of Berlin on 22nd February 1980. Mr Reuther is better known as ‘Frank Farian’ a German record producer, founding member and the voice behind the 1970s pop group and disco sensation ‘Boney M’

In 1978 the band produced a double A-side single ‘Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring’ which reached number one within many international pop charts, swiftly followed up by chart busting hit ‘Rasputin’ and the bands Christmas single “Mary’s Boy Child – Oh My Lord” which reached number one in the UK charts that year. Presumably the success of these songs allowed Mr Reuther the pleasure of acquiring his new BMW M1!

According to the copy of the original Fahrzeugbrief held on file, it is understood that Reuther still owned the M1 in September 1989, by which time the purposeful ‘Procar’ type bodywork had been fitted, which it retains to this very day

The next known owner of this special car was Mr Edwin Schwedka of Friedrichsdorf in November 2008 who later sold the car in 2011 to Mr Frank Jenner of Belgium before the current owner acquired the car

Fitted with period correct and highly suitable ‘Becker Mexico’ radio cassette system and ‘Clarion’ graphic equalizer and speaker system, our M1 is also fitted with a stunning set of bespoke 17’’ split rim alloy wheels shod with Bridgestone tires and is in superb condition having covered just over 90,000kms from new

Presented in excellent condition throughout, a recent test drive confirms this desirable BMW M1 drives and performs exactly as it should and unsurprisingly attracts a whirlwind of attention wherever it goes. Supplied with historical file and EU registration, we have no doubt the new owner will look and feel ‘Daddy Cool’ whenever they turn the key and drive this iconic late seventies German masterpiece
