Editor’s Choice: Lancia Aurelia B20 S GT

There are some who have a penchant for Italian automotive grandeur, but can do without a bellowing V12 and paintwork at the ‘dazzling’ end of the colour spectrum. For these select few, this elegant Lancia currently available in the Classic Driver Marketplace might prove quite the steed.

The example in question – a rally-prepared B20 S GT Aurelia, well-known in the relevant circles – comes in a rather more sombre shade than the average stage-blazer. But this is perhaps the perfect state for the Aurelia’s personality: its curves somehow exude class and sportiness simultaneously, making it look equally at home whether competing in an event such as next week’s Mille Miglia, or on a jaunt across the Continent on family vacation duty.

The understated Lancia from Netherlands-based Very Superior Old Cars boasts the desirable options of upgraded carbs and floor-mounted gearshift (both Nardi units) and, despite being prepared to FIVA standards (necessary FIVA passport included), the option to convert back to standard specification remains. All appears well under the bonnet, too, with the engine having covered 20,000km since a full rebuild in 2000.

As an inconspicuous example of classic Italian machinery at its finest, this Aurelia seems a very suitable purchase. Ready for use in classic competitions or events – or indeed to enjoy touring in an Italian classic without attracting the collective attention of whole villages – the warranted outlay of 98,500 euros is quite reasonable.
