Book Review: How To Be a Man

When is a man a man? You might find the answer to this philosophical question in the aptly named book from American style guru Glenn O'Brien.

The book, ‘How To Be a Man – A Guide to Style and Behavior for the Modern Gentleman’, gives advice that is largely of a sartorial nature, but it is also full of plentiful gems of advice on everything from how to throw a cocktail party to how – in the broadest sense – to be polite. But largely, O’Brien instructs the modern gentleman on what to wear, in his own inimitable, witty words.

In the video interview above, O’Brien explains his views on fashion and style. “Fashion is what everbody is doing. Style is about what you are doing,” he explains. And in case any reader has noticed the byline to this review, and wonders why a woman is writing about how to be a man, I need only quote O’Brien:

“Women should know how to be a man, too. So they can correct their husbands when they get it wrong.”

So now you know.
