Uncovering the secrets of Pebble Beach's greatest cars

Every August, the collector car world sets aside its plans and travels to a peninsula on the California coast, with its star show, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance closing the week. In our latest 30-minute film, we speak to the owners who shared their car's secrets and most incredible stories.

There's a lot to say about Car Week, it's never really been one event, but a constellation of them scattered across a few miles of California coastline. It has always been impressive, but this year we spent it chasing one thing above all: the stories behind the cars. The result is our latest film, thirty minutes uncovering the secrets of Pebble Beach and spending time with the owners themselves, from the roads of the Tour d'Elegance to the morning light on the eighteenth fairway. It's the closest thing to being there, and it's live now on the Classic Driver YouTube channel.

As for the week itself: there's the Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance, where cars worth more than most people's houses are driven exactly as their makers intended in the ultimate display of elegance in motion, emphasising that these things were built to move, not just admired from a rope line. Then come the auctions, where the numbers still manage to surprise even the most jaded among us. A Shelby Cobra Daytona went for north of $42 million this year; a McLaren F1 GTR crossed the block at another of the weekend's big sales, not to many the many debates still likely going on around modern Ferrari and Porsche prices in the US. The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance turned 75 this year, and remains the standard against which every other gathering measures itself. More than two thousand cars were put forward; roughly two hundred made the eighteenth fairway. One owner called simply being there the honour of a lifetime, and it's hard to argue.
