Prefer V12 Ferraris? RM Auctions at Villa d'Este 2013

To many, V8 Ferraris can be just as appealing as the famous V12s – but for the Ferraristi who can’t forego their beloved dozen-cylinder machines, there’ll be plenty at RM’s forthcoming Villa d’Este sale, including this tremendous trio.

Perhaps the most extreme of RM’s ‘full house’ of Ferrari supercars at Villa d’Este, the track-only 599XX allowed well-heeled tifosi to become, in essence, developmental test drivers.

Included in the multifarious modifications beyond the standard GTB road car was a pair of fans which sucked the air from the undercarriage, and blasted it out from where the tail-lights would ordinarily be. When Ferrari ran one round the Nordschleife, it equalled Niki Lauda’s pole-setting lap in the 1975 German GP at the wheel of his 312.

Estimate: EUR 800,000 – 1,100,000

With production of the bespoke 410 Superamerica coming to an end, Ferrari saw fit to employ the 4.0-litre Colombo V12 (used by the 250 series) in its successor. The 36 resulting 400s were then shipped off to meet their coachbuilders, before being delivered to their lucky owners – who included the Aga Khan, Gianni Agnelli, and Enzo Ferrari himself.

This Blu Sera Italver example is perhaps one of the best-executed, built on a short-wheelbase chassis and wrapped in glorious, covered-headlamp Pininfarina coachwork.

Estimate: EUR 1,900,000 – 2,300,000

Competition pedigree is one factor which multiplies the desirability (and hence price) of a classic Ferrari – and this 340/375 ‘Competizione’ has bucket-loads in its back catalogue. Not only was it one of three works entrants in the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours, it also competed in the 24 Hours of Spa and Carrera Panamericana in the same year. It also remains the only Ferrari works car to have been driven by three World Champions: Ascari, Farina and Hawthorn.

Estimate: On Request
