Apple and Porsche return to their core with this incredible throwback livery

Porsche Penske Motorsport will carry a reimagined Apple Computer rainbow livery on two Porsche 963s at Laguna Seca this weekend, reviving one of the most iconic designs in racing history ahead of the IMSA round on May 3rd.

Few liveries in motorsport history have achieved the kind of cultural permanence that belongs to the Apple Computer rainbow. First seen in competition during the 1980 season, when the US-based customer team Dick Barbour Racing entered a liveried Porsche 935 K3 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it has endured in the collective memory of enthusiasts ever since. Now, 46 years on, Porsche Penske Motorsport is bringing it back — and the result is quite something.

At round four of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca on May 3rd, two Porsche 963s will take to the track wearing a reimagined version of that iconic design. The livery is no mere cosmetic exercise, however. It marks two significant milestones converging in 2026: the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport and the 50th anniversary of Apple — two organisations that have long shared a quiet obsession with design, innovation, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

The location, too, feels fitting. Laguna Seca sits just a short drive from Apple Park in Cupertino, lending the occasion a certain poetic symmetry. The circuit also holds a special place in Porsche's recent history — last year, the works team sealed a dominant one-two finish there, further cementing the 963's status as the most successful car built to LMDh regulations.

This weekend, the No. 7 car of Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr arrives as a genuine championship contender, having already conquered both Daytona and Sebring this season. Their team leads both the drivers' and manufacturers' standings with characteristic Porsche composure. The rainbow colours may belong to another era, but everything beneath them is very much of the moment. At Laguna Seca this weekend, nostalgia and performance will make for a compelling combination.
