One thing to come from Citroën’s acquisition of Maserati was a new flagship model for the quirky French marque. The SM combined Citroën’s cutting-edge, self-levelling, hydro-pneumatic suspension with a Maserati V6 and futuristic styling. In fact, its drag coefficient of 0.26 would place it in the top 10 of all production cars, even today.
Fifty years after its first car auction, auction house Finarte will return to the world of cars. On 14 May, in Brescia, just before for the start of the Mille Miglia, a number of cars associated with the greatest road race in the world will go under the hammer.
Off hand, you may not be aware of the name Matt Hummel, but if you’re a surveyor of social media, you must surely be aware of his weather-beaten, sun-faded, and thoroughly patinated Porsche 356 — to say it’s become an Instagram sensation is a bit of an understatement. Who hasn’t seen the Hummel 356? Once we saw this 356 being thrashed around mountain passes, overgrown woods, salt flats, and desert roads, we knew the person behind the wheel was definitely someone we wanted to meet.
Aste Bolaffi Classic Cars and Motor Vehicles Auction
23 May 2018
La Pista di Arese (Milan)
With rare automobiles and racing motorcycles, unique specimens and Stile Bertone prototypes, Aste Bolaffi enters the motor vehicle sector.
For its first Classic Cars and Motor Vehicles Auction, on 23 May at the Pista di Arese (Milan), Aste Bolaffi will present rare vintage cars, the youngtimer, and racing motorcycles together with unique pieces from Stile Bertone.
Roaring and sporty, elegant and iconic, the cars and motorcycles selected for the sale span over time and styles to meet both the demands of high-end collectors and the desires of those who buy for pure passion. Selected by a team of recognized experts in the sector – especially Antonio Ghini and Massimo Delbò – all the vehicles included in the auction catalogue are perfectly preserved or carefully restored, and meet the very high quality standards that since 1890 make Bolaffi the leader in collecting.
“For our first auction we wanted to create a gallery of well-preserved or restored vehicles and others to be studied and maybe get our hands on. Some are more easily attainable while others are extremely rare, but all of them have a history to tell and a solid reason to appear on the glossy pages of an auction catalogue rather than in the showcase of a used car showroom.”
Giulio Filippo Bolaffi, CEO of Aste Bolaffi
AUTOMOBILES
The selection of automobiles counts around 60 models including custom-built cars and collectibles. The top lot is a 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider, a model made famous by the film Il Sorpasso (estimate 900-1,100 thousand euros). Among the highlights there are also a rare 1931 Isotta Fraschini 8B (estimate 700-900 thousand euros), a 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Cabriolet Gangloff, a 1951 Lancia Aurelia B51 Berlina Linin Farina, a 1956 Alfa Romero 1900 Super Primavera by Boano, a 1982 Ferrari BB 512i, a 1973 BMW 2002 Cabrio, and a 1969 Maserati Quattroporte Frua. There is also a large group of Porches from different eras, including a 911 2.7 Carrera RS from 1973 (estimate 600-900 thousand euros). Among the supercars there is a 1998 Lamborghini Diablo VT.
MOTORCYCLES
The racing motorcycles are also highly anticipated, with the presence, among others, of a Triumph Trident 750 "Koelliker", a Norton Manx, and an AMF Harley Davidson 250 RA.
LOTS FROM STILE BERTONE
In the catalogue there are also rare lots from the bankrupt Stile Bertone, including two show cars, motorized and running: the Alfa Romeo 8C Pandion 2010 (estimate 250-350 thousand euros) and the Bertone Nuccio 2012 (estimate 300-400 thousand euros), offered in lots that include projects and photographs. Project designs and style models in 1:4 and 1:10 scale of some prototypes such as the Lamborghini Athon or models which later entered into production like the Lamborghini Urraco and Fiat Dino Coupé will also be included.
LOCATION
The auction will take place in the afternoon on Wednesday, 23 May, in the building that stands alongside the original test track of the Alfa Romeo factory in Arese, just outside of Milan. In addition to the “static” car show, there will also be an exhibition – a world first in an auction – where attendees will be able to watch some of the cars cruise on the track.
