EXTERIOR
Rarely are cars more recognisable than Hot Hatches of the 80’s and most people of a certain age will remember these wild wide arch monsters completely disrupting the market. Prominently known for their work with Peugeot, Dimma Design and their UK head honcho Terry Pankhurst would also get to work on revolutionising 5’s and Clios.

Drawing inspiration from it’s mid-engined big brother, this wide arch Dimma 5 Turbo looks incredible finished in the rare option 405 Sports Blue. Having been restored recently the panel fit and finish is excellent, complimented by the unique styling additions to ensure perfect period accuracy.

Dimma graphics, an original sticker pack fund in the car some time ago, set the car off perfectly.

INTERIOR
The cabin space has been preserved beautifully, with the showcase ‘Connect’ leather seats presenting in fabulous condition. With sports blue piping, carbon pedals and white dials there is no doubt the interior matches the renowned Max Power aesthetic.

With many new and refurbished OEM parts the car has received a great deal of time and care to ensure originality with a new quartz clock, gear knob and parcel shelf. Carpets and mats are in excellent order with switchgear also showing very well – a Bluetooth compatible Alpine head unit the only upgrade from factory.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Producing 120 bhp the 1.4 unit was never the most powerful engine in the world, but when fitted to a car weighing just 830kg it made for a surprisingly quick car. The 5 Turbo was more about acceleration; sprinting to 60mph in just 7.3 seconds thanks to the tremendous boost produced by the Garrett T2 Turbo after a good old dose of 80’s lag!

The engine was removed and serviced upon re-fitment and as such the engine bay is spotlessly clean and tidy retaining all of its fragile plastic covers, rubbers and pipe work much of which gets damaged over time. Void of the usual aftermarket modifications the engine remains stock and performs as Renault intended.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
As is the case with so many wide arch specials the wheels make the car – Dimma had quite the reputation for getting this absolutely spot on.

The superb 16 inch Compomotive split rims have power coated centres, a polished outer rim and as new Toyo tyres all round. Taken apart and built up with new hardware there is even a full size spare with a painted wheel cage.

The braking system has been overhauled – new front Calipers with discs and pads all round.

HISTORY FILE
First registered by Liningtons of Portsmouth in April of 1987 by its first owner the original service book illustrates 8 services prior to the conversion in 1996.

There are stacks of invoices from both the main dealer and Prima Racing before the second owner made contact with Dimma who would provide a quote for all of the work necessary. In July of 1997 this example started a new life as the car you see today, enjoyed and cherished by only two other owners after. During a period in storage the car was subject to an exhaustive restoration process and has recently been endorsed to Dimma’s official 5 GT Turbo section. There is numerous paperwork between the previous owner and manufacturer confirming the genuine body kit number and what was involved with the conversion. Later additions such as clear indicators, revised grille and DTM style mirrors are also provided.

With a history file brimming with invoicing and correspondence from day one, alongside a complete book pack and spare keys, there is also a recent Octane magazine feature with Terry Pankhurst discussing the car’s inception and presenting a plaque.

The 80’s cult car scene evokes some wonderful memories with some incredible cars – none more provocative than this exceptional example, thought to be 1 of only 2 extant.
