Even supercars can't outrun the 1,156hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric

With a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds and 1,156 horsepower you would think we were talking about a supercar. But no, these are the specs behind the just-released Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric. Let’s take a closer look.

The first-generation Porsche Cayenne was a revolutionary vehicle. Not only did it combine Porsche’s widely loved sporty driving experience with true off road ability, but it also proved to be a massive sales hit, saving Porsche from financial turmoil and propelling the Stuttgart-based marque to their current dominance in the market. Today is an important one, then, as Porsche reveals the much-anticipated Cayenne Electric alongside the ballistic Cayenne Turbo Electric.

Topping the electric Cayenne range — which will be sold alongside the existing combustion and hybrid offerings — is the Cayenne Turbo Electric, boasting a whopping 1,156 peak horsepower figure. As one would expect, the acceleration times are startling: 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 7.4 seconds, before rocketing to a top speed of 260 km/h. This is in part thanks to a new Launch Control system and direct oil cooling of the electric motor on the rear axle, which unlocks the peak power figure and up to 1,500 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the standard Cayenne is no slouch either, with an impressive peak horsepower of 442 hp and a 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds.

The Cayenne Electric also boasts Formula E-levels of energy recuperation, with up to 600 kW of recuperation meaning in normal driving most braking scenarios are handled solely by the electric motors. Even so, the Cayenne Turbo Electric is still available with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes should you be in the mood for more spirited driving. Underpinning the new all-electric Cayenne models is newly-developed 113 kWh high-voltage battery with dual-sided cooling. Range anxiety should be a thing of the past, with the Cayenne Electric boasting a combined WLTP range of up to 642 kilometres, and the Turbo up to 623 kilometres. The 800-volt architecture and peak 400 kW charging power enables charging from 10 to 80 percent capacity in just 16 minutes. Even better, the Cayenne Electric is the first Porsche model to optionally support wireless charging, allowing you to simply park over a charging pad and walk away.

Visually, the new Cayenne is a evolution of the current combustion-engined Cayenne and the new electric Macan, however, the biggest exterior change is in the active aero on offer. Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) adapts to your driving situation with movable cooling flaps at the front, an adaptive roof spoiler, and innovative active aero blades at the rear of the Turbo.

Finally, we come to the interior, which can only be described as an absolute tech feast. Thanks to a 13 centimetre longer wheelbase, there’s more space inside then ever before — and more screens for that matter. Porsche have fitted the Cayenne Electric with what they call the ‘Flow Display’, a curved OLED panel that integrates seamlessly into the centre console. This is paired with a 14.25-inch OLED instrument panel and an optional 14.9-inch passenger display, combining to form the largest display surface ever in a Porsche. With so many advancements, the Cayenne Electric is undoubtedly one of the most desirable SUVs on the market, and pricing, including VAT and country-specific equipment, start at 105,200 euros for the Cayenne and 165,500 euros for the Cayenne Turbo in Germany.
