There are fast classics, and then there are classics that feel fast. Even the slowest of vintage cars, when in the right hands at least, can feel terrifyingly quick, but the Mercedes-Benz SEC is a classic that needn’t not shout of its pace, instead showcase it in one of the refined and dignified ways on four wheels. Now, there’s a new reimagination of the lovable coupé in town, and it’s badder than ever before. You’ve likely met the ‘Hammer’, AMG’s 6.0-litre V8 beast, this is its even angrier V12-toting sibling, and is the product of Renntech’s pure lust for speed.
Known as the SEC V12 Widebody ‘Sledgehammer’, it is firmly a no-half-measures creation, featuring modern coachbuilt and reimagined areas of the Mercedes-Benz C126 SEC that aims to be the “ultimate evolution” of the platform. It will, sadly, be limited to just 12 vehicles worldwide, with the series arriving in 2027, making sightings of this wide-hipped monster a truly special experience.

At the heart of the project is the engine that turns the whole endeavour from impressive to faintly unbelievable. Mercedes’ M120 V12 is regarded as one of the marque’s most legendary powerplants, an all-aluminium and naturally aspirated lump that could handle high-revving intervals with complete smoothness. Renntech explicitly frames this car as a homage to the M120 engine, the very same motor found in automotive royalty like the CLK GTR and the Pagani Zonda.
But nostalgia isn’t the point here, power is also a key component. Renntech have upped its displacement to 7.5-litres, now pushing the engine to a staggering 660 horsepower with 650 lb-ft of torque. Remarkably, it’s positioned as the only naturally aspirated version of its kind in active production today, and it’s hand-built by Renntech entirely in-house, with an emphasis on being modernized and reliable while keeping the original character intact.

Visually, this isn’t a bolt-on-bodykit, either. The C126 widebody is developed during a full frame-up restoration, with widening and integrated ducting said to be functional, which aid in improving aerodynamics, cooling, and high-speed stability rather than merely turning heads, though its likely going to do that too. Completing the look are custom-forged wheels that perfectly fill the flared arches, while each cabin is tailored to its owner. Renntech has been tuning AMG and Mercedes-Benz since 1989, and with this SEC, the message is clear, that the stately grand coupé we know and love hasn’t lost a single bit of its bonkers alter-ego!
