He’s the god of truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, with a passion for archery, music and dance. Son of Zeus and Leto, and the twin brother of Artemis, anything he aims his arrow at, he can reach. This mindset of Greek god Apollo is exactly what inspired Guillermo Moya to create his ultimate go-anywhere vehicle, sculpted into the form of a Ranger Rover Classic. Traversing the coastal paths and thick mud-trails within Costa Rica and beyond, documenting each journey on their Instagram channel, this dynamic duo won’t stop exploring! We caught up with Guillermo and 'Apolo' recently to find out more about their journey…
Thanks for chatting to us Guillermo! First off, tell us a little more about the Range Rover…
"It is a 1987 Classic Range Rover with a unique and rare colour known as Cornish Cream. It stands out because, depending on the lighting, it can appear more yellow or white. It has been developed as an overlanding project, as it’s an exceptional vehicle platform capable of handling any type of terrain and condition, all while offering unmatched comfort."
We see the Range Rover isn’t factory-fresh, what modifications has it been treated to?
"The modifications have been tailored to suit its intended use and needs. Some of these include larger tires, a full suspension upgrade, bull bar and spare tire carrier, a personalized trunk setup, electrical system, a winch, and many other additional details designed to keep be comfortable, safe, and out of trouble in the wilderness!"
Have you always been a lover of the Land Rover, or was it a more recent obsession since owning Apolo?
"I learned to drive in one at a very young age. My connection to them goes beyond their legendary legacy; I had the chance to grow up surrounded by them. Apolo has been a project with a value that goes far beyond the material, and it’s something I’ve truly enjoyed every step of the way."
We have to ask, where does the name Apolo come from?
"Apolo is named after the Greek god, known for his mastery with the bow — it was said that anything he aimed at in the universe, he could reach. That idea resonated with me. It draws a parallel to how I feel about Apolo: with him, I can reach any destination."
If there was a world where you didn’t have Apolo, would there be another overlanding vehicle you’d be using for your adventures?
"I honestly think that, aside from a classic Range Rover, a classic Defender 130 or even a Nissan Patrol would make an awesome overlanding rig."
Tell us more about some of your most memorable trips...
"Every trip is different, even if it’s to the same place. Costa Rica is full of incredible destinations, but beyond those stunning spots, what really makes a journey unforgettable is the company — and the freedom to explore the unknown."
As we always ask in our Classic Drivers features, what would your three dream car garage look like?
"That’s a really tough question. No doubt, a dream garage should have a Porsche 964, a Ferrari 250 GT SWB, and I’d say a 1960s Jaguar E-Type. I’ve probably left out another 50 cars!"
What’s the next adventure you have planned with the Range Rover?
"I’ll probably visit a few countries in the near future — I’m getting Apolo ready for longer trips."
