BMW drivers rejoice! Indicators aren’t mandatory on this M8 GTE racer

Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction is packed with incredible road and track icons, but fans of Bavarian Motor Works will naturally flock to this race-winning 2019 BMW M8 GTE race car.

It’s among the longest running jokes in the automotive world and one that more often than not rings true. BMW drivers and correct indicator usage go together like water and oil, and for some reason the owners of these ultimate driving machines never like to let other road users know their next move. Luckily, Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction has a race-winning 2019 BMW M8 GTE racing car which — although fitted with indicators as per endurance racing regulations — can be driven on track to your heart’s content without so much as a single tick from the turn signal.

Picking up where the M6 GTLM left off, the M8 GTE was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2017. While it looked like its road-going counterpart, in reality the M8 GTE was an entirely different beast, manufactured by BMW Motorsport from the ground up as a LM GTE homologated vehicle. At just a hair short of 5 metres long, the M8 GTE was monstrous in both size and power, equipped with a front-mid mounted BMW P63/1 turbocharged V8 that produced almost 600 horsepower.

Jokes aside, this particular car — chassis number 1809 — has incredible racing provenance, having been driven to victory in the GTLM class during the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2020 with drivers John Edwards, Augusto Farfus, Jesse Krohn, and Chas Mostert taking turns in the cockpit. Factory-campaigned BMW race cars very rarely hit the market, so you won’t want to pass on this unmissable opportunity to acquire a true money-no-object GT race car.
