Description

Excellence on the road and in rallying
— Mercedes 190 SL

The story begins in the early 1950s, when Mercedes-Benz set out to develop a roadster that would reflect the luxury and performance of the 300 SL, but at a more accessible price point. Under the guidance of engineer Karl Wilfert and designer Walter Häcker, the 190 SL was born. After the 300 SL was introduced, a Mercedes importer in the United States noted that although many people were interested, the 300 SL was simply too expensive for the average consumer looking for a weekend sports car. After consulting with headquarters in Germany, action was taken quickly. That same year, the 190 SL—based on the Ponton—was unveiled at the 1954 New York Auto Show. The 190 SL also offered a comfortable ride thanks to its independent front suspension and robust rear axle.

At the Cool Classic Club, we’ve become quite familiar with the 190 SL by now. This particular example dates from 1963 and has a remarkable history. It has been carefully restored by a Mercedes specialist in the Netherlands. As you’d expect from a Mercedes, all invoices have been meticulously documented. Matching numbers and fully ready for many beautiful drives — and plenty of thumbs-up from passers-by!

Are you ready to experience this car’s class for yourself?
