The proportion-perfect 6C 2500SS Villa d’Este Coupé was the last in a long line of legendary six-cylinder Alfa Romeos, a breed that had enjoyed fame and competition fortune during the inter-war years. While its developmental roots lay back in the mid-20s (when engineer Vittorio Jano had sired Alfa’s celebrated straight-six), the configuration was by no means outdated in the immediate post-War period.

There are few events in Germany where you can get so close to such rare cars as you can at Schloss Bensberg Classics. The event isn’t like Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como, or Pebble Beach on the beautiful Californian coastline. But the baroque palace possesses a certain charm, albeit in a completely different way. Considering this is only the sixth running of the classic rendezvous, it’s surprising to see such an impressive collection of cars participating in the concours d’elegance, the event’s main focal point.

For the Maserati’s owner Andreas Mohringer, this isn't the first time that one of his cars has won ‘Best of Show’ at the Schloss Bensberg Classics – in 2012, his excellent Dino 166P/206P did enough to convince the judges. So is he accustomed to winning concours events yet? "No, quite the opposite!" he says, laughing. "I was totally surprised and did not expect the award. To win it again seemed so unlikely because of the success two years ago."
