Our picks from Bonhams’ Aston Martin affair in 2019
There’s an air of Noah’s Ark to The Aston Martin sale this year, an auction that’s been a staple of Bonhams’ British activities over the last 20 years. For 18 years, the sale was held at Aston Martin Works Service at Newport Pagnell, but last year it moved to Englefield House.

Quittenbaum - Masterful Exuberance - The Marie and David Cooper Collection Volume II
After the sale of the important collection of Art Deco sculptures in November 2018, another 100 works of art, furniture and objects from the estate of London lawyer David Cooper will be auctioned on May 29th. One of the auction's top lots is Rembrandt Bugatti's bronze sculpture 'Athlete nu au repos' (circa 1907), of which up to date only one cast is known to be realized. The furniture designs of his father Carlo Bugatti, who is represented with five positions, are also rare on the market. In addition to contemporary photography art with works by Steve McCurry, Mario Sorrenti and Annie Leibowitz important French handicrafts is a focus of the upcoming sale. The auction kicks off with Lalique glass, including the table lamp 'Suzanne' from 1925.
From the house of Cartier, rare table clocks from 1910 to 1930 are on offer, including a yellow enamelled clock from 1910 and an Art Deco carriage clock with rose quartz case. Equally attractive is a classicist miniature vase by Fabergé. Artisan perfection, outstanding beauty and extraordinary aesthetics have won over David Cooper very early on for the charm of the arts and crafts. For his collection, the collector bought only the finest quality. This applies to all collection areas. An exciting addition to the filigree objets d'arts are the Louis Vuitton trunks and some automobiles such as a red Ferrari 208 GTB from 1981 and a Mercedes 280 SE Coupé 3.5 liter, built in 1972, both of which are in top condition.
All objects of the auction 'MASTERFUL EXUBERANCE - The Marie & David Cooper Collection Volume II' can be viewed from 23 May as part of the preview.

RM Sotheby’s will sell the world’s oldest Porsche-badged car in Monterey
In 1939, the German government planned a 1,500km road race from Berlin to showcase both its Autobahn system and the new KdF-Wagen, a new ‘people’s car’ designed by Ferdinand Porsche for Volkswagen. Then state-owned, Volkswagen asked Porsche to create a special streamlined endurance version of the KdF-Wagen for the race. Three cars were commissioned and built at Reutter Works in Zuffenhausen by the same engineers who’d go on to construct the 356s.
