It all started, no doubt, over a stiff drink or three. Why, asked the students from Oxford and Cambridge, shouldn’t we travel overland from London to Singapore?

Usually, such thoughts disappear with the morning hangover, but these six students hung onto their idea. They acquired two Land Rovers, all kinds of equipment – and went on to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

That was in 1955, but the daring expedition came back into my mind when reading Jan Baedeker’s report on undertaking the penultimate section of the Land Rover Experience Tour 2013 last week, along the Silk Road to Delhi. You can read about his personal adventures below.
