Let's rewind the clocks by a decade, to the 18th of September 2013 to be exact. It's a momentous day, one you've been waiting for since first seeing the Porsche 918 concept car way back in Geneva 2010. Porsche’s most innovative, dynamic, and sleek hypercar since the 959 is finally working its way through the production line, and you just know it’s going to be every bit as perfect as you’re expecting.
Understandably, the wait for your new hypercar is almost unbearable, but luckily Porsche mention that there are two other ultra-exclusive models that might help you pass the time until delivery day arrives. Dubbed the Edition 918 Spyder, the two models come in the form of a 997.2 Turbo S Coupé and Cabriolet. However, these are no ordinary 911s; this is Porsche we're talking about, after all.
Only available to 918-purchasing clients, both cars are identical, except that one allows the wind to flow through your hair at the touch of the button. Much like their hypercar namesake, just 918 examples were produced, making these 911s an exceptionally rare find, even more so when accompanied by their cabriolet sibling. Both cars are finished in Silver with a plethora of exterior and interior design elements that echo the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder’s dynamic styling. There is a smattering of carbon fibre across the bodywork, including the Turbo’s hallmark air-intake, with acid green elements and badging that enhance this special edition even further. Of course, one of the 918’s signature features has been carried over to these 911s too: the acid green brake callipers that certainly contrast against the somewhat subtle silver paintwork.
The acid-trip continues as you step inside the leather-filled cabin, with contrast stitching and luminous details throughout. Even the markings on the instrument dials are finished in acid-green; a further reminder that these are no ordinary 911s. Each car is branded with a special edition plaque, with a build number that matches that of the customer’s 918, completing the homage in the best possible way.
Of course, let’s not forget the ludicrous record-breaker parked alongside these stylish grocery-getters. The 918 continued where the Carrera GT left off, proving to the world that Porsche not only made the best SUVs and sports cars, but also the best hypercars too. Part of the ‘holy trinity’, the 918 faced some stiff competition from the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari, with each one representing the pinnacle of speed and agility.
This particular 918 is exactly what the doctor ordered, finished in one of the greatest shades in Porsche’s extensive palette: Liquid Silver. Build number 109 was also treated to the gorgeous Magnesium wheels from factory, an eye-watering EUR 64,183 extra, but one that we think sets the car off beautifully. As the world moves into a downforce-obsessed, canard-toting speed-fest with the likes of Zenvo and Rimac, the Porsche 918 has matured into a subtle powerhouse. It's a car that's ready to inject terror into its occupants at the press of a big toe, but it's also one that can remain relaxed and - above all - silent, thanks to its clever hybrid technology.
Despite the dramatic styling, very few customers opted for the unique additions to the 918, and all three of these Porsches have covered a mere 500 kilometres from new, representing one of the rarest trios we’ve come across from Zuffenhausen's ever-impressive special edition offerings. Both the 918 and Coupé variant carry the same #109 build slot, with the equally as rare Cabriolet carrying #623. As the 918 heads towards its teenage years, now is very much the time to get in and enjoy what will likely be one of the brand’s future icons.
