High above Lake Tegernsee, with an unobstructed view of the majestic Wallberg, sits Gut Kaltenbrunn, a historic estate dating back to the 15th century that combines Bavarian heritage with a very modern sense of occasion. It is, in short, the kind of place where a pre-war Horch roadster or a Maserati racing car somehow looks right at home. The Concours of Elegance Germany returns to the area this Saturday and Sunday, 4th and 5th July, with forty-two exceptional automobiles drawn from leading private collections across Europe and beyond. 

Brought to you by the organisers of the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, the event is international in content, bringing together the world's key collectors to celebrate their vehicles in the most spectacular of settings. Alongside the main concours there's a Club Trophy, an Emerging Collectors display, a Ladies Concours, and the free-to-enter Gallery, meaning there’s plenty to look at across the weekend. During the main concours, nine decades of automotive history will descend onto one very scenic lawn, with this year’s headline a special birthday party for one of Italy’s most legendary marques. 

Expect to see an incredible array of Maserati racing and touring machinery, assembled in honour of the brand’s centenary year, and it's a genuinely staggering lineup once you start reading the entry list, there's the 1955 Maserati 300 S, a short-nose Fantuzzi-bodied racer that notched up several wins and podiums on the American sports car circuit in period, sitting alongside a one-off Vignale convertible prototype that picked up Maserati Classiche's hundredth Certificate of Authenticity earlier this year. Then there's the 5000 GT, built at the personal request of the Shah of Iran, which later passed through the hands of Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and reportedly inspired the line "my Maserati does 185" in Life in the Fast Lane. 

The pre-war contingent is just as theatrical, where a 1939 Horch 855 Special Roadster by Gläser will dazzle the visitors. It is the only known surviving original from a run of a reported five to seven cars, bringing a dramatically long bonnet and sweeping pontoon wings to the lawn, while a supercharged 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K by Erdmann & Rossi pumps out 180 hp from its 5.4-litre straight eight, good for around 170 km/h, which was an absurd number back in 1936. 

Elsewhere, a stunning 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing in Agave Green, a Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada personally signed off by Giotto Bizzarrini himself, and a 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 that finished fifth at the actual 1931 Mille Miglia round out a field that genuinely doesn't have a weak entry in it.
