Would you have paid 437,000 dollars for these two chairs?

The results from Phillips’ recent Design Sale in New York confirm the burgeoning interest in vintage furniture – two 1950s armchairs by Carlo Mollino actually doubled their pre-sale estimate…

Amazing prices

Owned by an Italian collector since 1979, the two dark green mohair armchairs were estimated to fetch between 180,000 and 240,000 US dollars, yet the bids came thick and fast, the hammer finally dropping at an amazing 437,000 dollars. And they weren’t the only lots to well exceed their estimates – a mirror decorated with small birds (est. 45,000 to 65,000 dollars) made an impressive 112,000 dollars, and a rug by Märta Måås Fjetterström fetched 112,500 dollars (est. 50,000 to 70,000 dollars).
