The trend for ‘car pooling’ isn’t new, however. In 1997, British band Oasis sank a white Rolls-Royce in a swimming pool for its album cover; but the band was itself following in the footsteps of Who drummer Keith Moon, who is said to have plonked a Lincoln Continental into a hotel pool back in the 1970s. We are curious to see whether the Mert & Marcus tribute will trigger a new fad – and the next auction records will be set by by well-watered and chlorinated classics.
