H&H is continuing its 2007 auction programme with another regional sale, this time held at the superb Imperial War Museum at Duxford. The 71-car entry has a cosmopolitan feel, with star billing shared by a 1956 Cooper T39 'Bobtail' for £90,000 - 100,000 and this RHD 1968 Ferrari 330 GTC, estimated at £80,000 - 90,000.
Introduced as a comfortable long-distance GT companion to the race-track-focused 275 GTB, the GTC (later equipped with a larger motor and a few other changes in 365 guise) has recently seen its value rise in line with other V12 Ferraris. It’s finished in Amaranto (a metallic burgundy), with beige leather trim. There’s also a more traditionally painted Rosso Corsa/Crema 1986 Ferrari 328 GTS for £22,000 - 24,000 that has been with its last (lady) owner for 17½ years.
1959 AUSTIN-HEALEY 3000 MKI - £24,000 - 26,000 |
1953 JAGUAR XK120 ROADSTER SPECIAL EQUIPMENT LHD - £25,000 - 27,000 |
1933 Aston Martin 12/50 Open Tourer - £44,000 - 48,000
Auctioneer Simon Hope likes his historic racing cars, so it’s no surprise that the Duxford sale includes several examples of either machines in current competition, or potential race entries. The 1956 Cooper T39 'Bobtail' (£90,000 - 100,000) is believed to be one of the three Works 'Bobtail' racers that were apparently built for the 1956 season, and campaigned by the likes of Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss and Ivor Bueb. And talking of ‘Black Jack’, the auction has one of the last 1970 Brabham BT28/29s made, an F3 car in period that now comes with a Racing Fabrications Cosworth BDA engine and Hewland FT200 gearbox for historic F2. A quick little car, and likely to sell for £28,000 - 32,000.
1982 ROLLS-ROYCE CORNICHE - £10,000 - 12,000 |
1970 ASTON MARTIN DBS - £19,000 - 21,000 |
The catalogue has two glassfibre cars from the early 60s, a rare 1964 Morgan Plus Four Plus - one of around 26 of these cars believed to have been made - for £30,000 - 35,000 , and what is described as a ‘1959/1966’ Lotus Elite at £15,000 - 17,000. The low estimate for this restoration-project reflects both its condition, and a duplication of chassis numbers when in the ownership of well-known British racer Richard 'Dickie' Stoop, who had acquired a replacement bodyshell and various other components from Lotus to repair his crashed 1959 Le Mans entry. It was later built up as a complete car and registered in ’66 with the same chassis number.
Enthusiasts for British classics will appreciate the number of entries from Triumph, Austin-Healey, Aston Martin and Jaguar. The lhd 1953 Jaguar XK120 Roadster Special Equipment looks nice at £25,000 - 27,000, while DBS-fanciers will like the 1970 car for £19,000 - 21,000, another ‘last chance to buy a six-cylinder DB-era Aston for sensible money’ perhaps?
1986 FERRARI 328 GTS - £22,000 - 24,000 |
1959/1966 LOTUS ELITE £15,000 - 17,000 |
Finally, how about the 1982 Rolls-Royce Corniche, a Royal Blue with tan hide car estimated at £10,000 - 12,000? We always tip these cars and this one looks particularly attractive.
1964 MORGAN PLUS FOUR PLUS - £30,000 - 35,000 |
1967 PORSCHE 911 - £14,000 - 16,000 |
Prior to the motor cars, H&H will sell over 70 motorcycles including a concours-winning 1967 Triumph Trophy TR6 for £4,500 - 5,500, and on Tuesday 9 October an extensive selection of automobilia such as the Signed 'Life At The Limit' by Graham Hill for £50 - 80.
