Mercedes-Benz 190 Series E 2.3-16: A Legendary Sports Sedan in Smoke Silver Metallic

When the conversation turns to compact sporting saloons with a rich motorsport heritage, there is simply no getting around the Mercedes-Benz 190 series. Known internally as the W201, this model marked a revolutionary step for Mercedes-Benz in 1982. It was the first compact Mercedes ever, developed with an unprecedented focus on safety, aerodynamics and driving dynamics.
The absolute crowning glory of the 190 series was, without a doubt, the 190 E 2.3-16. This version was developed in collaboration with Cosworth and made its debut in 1984. The goal: homologation for touring car racing. The 2.3-16 boasted a 16-valve cylinder head, good for around 185 bhp (in European specification), paired with a manual 5-speed gearbox featuring a sporting dogleg shift.
The 190 E 2.3-16 earned worldwide fame during the legendary opening race of the new Nürburgring GP circuit in 1984, where none other than Ayrton Senna crossed the finish line first in an identical 190 E 2.3-16. With this, Mercedes-Benz firmly cemented its name in modern touring car history.
Technically, the 2.3-16 was well ahead of its time:
• Self-levelling hydropneumatic rear axle
• Reinforced chassis
• Larger brakes
• Functional aerodynamic bodykit with rear spoiler
All of this made the Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16 one of the most well-balanced sports saloons of the 1980s, a direct rival to the BMW M3 E30.

This Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 from May 1986 is an exceptionally original and carefully preserved example.

What truly makes this car special:
• Almost entirely in its original paint, a rarity for this model
• Dealer maintained for nearly its entire life
• Subsequently taken into a private collection
• Not driven during the collection period

The bodywork in Smoke Silver Metallic is in a particularly handsome and original condition. The paint appears deep and even, a hallmark that is only retained through careful ownership and correct storage. The panel gaps are tight, and the distinctive 16V spoiler and side skirts are undamaged and original.
The black leather interior exudes that typical 1980s Mercedes solidity: robust, timeless and sporting. The characteristic Recaro sports seats still offer excellent support and are in very tidy condition. The dashboard, instruments and gear lever show minimal signs of use, in keeping with the mileage of 177,524 km.
Technically, this 190 E 2.3-16 has always been maintained in accordance with factory specifications. Thanks to the consistent dealer servicing and its later life as a collector's piece, the mechanicals have remained in very well-kept condition. The engine runs smoothly, revs eagerly and delivers that characteristic high-revving 16-valve note for which this model is so beloved.
This is not a restored car: this is a carefully preserved original example. And that is precisely what makes it so appealing to the connoisseur and collector.

Why the Mercedes 190 E 2.3-16 is a sought-after classic

The market for modern classics and iconic 1980s performance cars has been shifting strongly in recent years. The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 occupies a prominent place within it thanks to:
• Limited production numbers
• A direct link to DTM history
• Cosworth engine development
• An analogue driving experience
• Timeless, functional design
Original, unrestored examples with largely original paint are becoming ever scarcer. This makes this particular vehicle an interesting investment and a driver's car through and through.
