Once again, it’s a Ferrari 250 GT California Spider that headlines a major auction sale, this time in SWB, covered headlamp form, i.e. the most desirable configuration. Gooding has set the estimate at $16m - $18m, which pitches it squarely between the similar example sold by Bonhams for $15.18m almost exactly a year ago, and the $18.5m ex-Alain Delon ‘barn-find’ car sold in February by Artcurial.

It’s always the Summer of Car Love in central California for what used to be called 'The Weekend' but has grown to become 'The Week'.  And if you haven’t made your travel plans yet, best get Google fired up, because rooms, flights, and hire cars rapidly become fully booked – and at top dollar.

Leading the 111-car lotlist for Bonhams’ all-day Friday auction at Quail Lodge this year is an alloy-bodied ‘Interim’ Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione, whose TdF underpinnings were graced with an elongated version of the coachwork worn by SWBs – with a debatable level of success.

We first looked at the snappily titled Pinnacle Portfolio when it was announced back in early June. With a lotlist comprising some of the most collectable cars in the world, we expect the Thursday auction not only to set the tone for the rest of the week’s sales, but also to provide insight into the current values of models that haven’t been sold on the open market for some time.
