Bonhams will take over the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles on 14 August for its behind-closed-doors Quail Motorcar Auction, the bidding for which will be submitted online or via the telephone. The auction is being held in place of Bonhams’ traditional Quail Lodge sale, which takes place further up the Californian coastline during Monterey Car Week. 

Conceived by the Austrian collector Heinz Swoboda to offer owners of competition Ferraris and Maserati (think 360 Challenges, F430 GT2s, 488 GTEs and MC12 GT1s) the opportunity to collectively enjoy their cars in a laid-back and non-competitive environment, the Challenge & GT Days has capitalised on the surge of interest in modern-era sports-racing cars, which continues to show no sign of let-up. 

Will Beaumont would love to say that he’s fostered a lifelong affinity for the BMW brand, but that would be an untruth. The Riviera Blue BMW 2002 that the 31-year-old British freelance motoring journalist has spent the last six years building to his exacting standards does, however, strike a personal chord.
