Description
The second-generation Volkswagen Passat, known internally as the Type 32B, was launched in 1980 and represented a significant evolution of its predecessor. The bodywork appeared considerably larger and more elongated, although it was still based on the tried-and-tested front-wheel-drive platform with a longitudinally mounted engine. The hatchback in particular, with its large tailgate that opened high up, emphasized the functional credentials of the model range and offered above-average space for a mid-range car of the time. In terms of design, the Passat B2 remained true to the functional, clean lines of its predecessor, yet appeared more mature and substantial. The timeless design language contributed significantly to the series’ respectable appearance and played a decisive role in shaping the typical ‘sales representative’ image of the 1980s. In addition to the saloon version, the series was also available as a Variant, which played a major role particularly in commercial and family-oriented use. The five-cylinder models in the upmarket GL (Grand Luxe’) specification were positioned as a technical highlight and the top-of-the-range version designed for comfort. The 1.9-litre five-cylinder petrol engine developed by Audi, producing 116 hp, was renowned for its refined running and gave the vehicle a distinctive character. Power was transmitted via a five-speed manual gearbox (designed as a 4+E) with a long-ratio final gear to reduce revs and increase efficiency. The GL5 with hatchback bodywork offered here was originally delivered to Switzerland and has been handed over to its first owner on 17 December 1982 by Garage U. Stalder AG in Hasle-Rüegsau, Berne. The emission control document indicates changes of ownership in 1986/87, 1997/98 and 2021/22. In 2024, the iconic Passat finally came into possession of its last owner, who cherished and cared for it in the spirit of its previous owners. The comprehensive service booklet reveals that, in addition to the standard servicing and maintenance, the timing belt and water pump were replaced in 2017 at 174’173 km. The last major service was carried out in February 2026 at 194’500 km, meaning this robust VW is ready for new adventures. The 194’800 km shown on the odometer is verifiable thanks to the complete service history, and the vehicle is presented in an honest, well-maintained original condition with age-related signs of wear and a lovely patina. This classic car will be handed over with the latest veteran MOT dating from September 2026.
