Volkswagen 181 Acapulco Thing: one of just 400 built
There are rare cars, and then there is the Acapulco. This Volkswagen Type 181, internationally known as the “Thing” and in other markets also referred to as the “Kübelwagen”, began life as a versatile, no-nonsense vehicle with military roots. This particular version, however, is a very different story. The Acapulco was a special edition created for a select and exclusive clientele.
This car features the characteristic two-tone white and blue paintwork, complemented by a striped canvas roof: a combination that makes the Acapulco instantly recognisable among all other Type 181 models.
Built for the Acapulco jet set
Between May and July 1974, Volkswagen produced just 400 examples of the Acapulco Thing, commissioned specifically for two luxury resorts in Acapulco, Mexico. The cars were used to transport wealthy guests from the airport to the coast, a role perfectly suited to the carefree and colourful character of the vehicle. This is also where the name Acapulco comes from.
Of all Type 181 versions ever produced, the Acapulco is among the rarest. With only 400 examples built worldwide over a period of barely three months, it occupies a truly special place in Volkswagen history.
A lifestyle on wheels
The Acapulco is more than simply a car: it represents simplicity, versatility and an adventurous, carefree lifestyle. Both in terms of design and history, this model holds a distinctive position in the automotive world, something you immediately experience when getting behind the wheel.
The odometer currently reads 60,481 miles.
