Commissioned by a longstanding British collector of exotics and supercars who named this car ‘The Sussex Commission’, this stunning 911 has recently been renamed The McQueen Commission, for its striking resemblance to one of the most revered roadgoing Porsches of the 20th century—the Slate Grey 1970 Porsche 911 S owned by Hollywood icon Steve McQueen and driven by him in his seminal film Le Mans.
Completed by Singer Vehicle Design in May 2019 and using a UK-specification 911 as its basis, this car was finished in paint-to-sample Attack Grey over black leather echoing the colours of Steve McQueen’s famous 911 S. Its defining feature, meanwhile, is a spectacular Le Mans-style wooden gear knob beautifully turned in layered balsa, echoing that of the Porsche 917 that The King of Cool drove in the 1970 film Le Mans.
The car’s impressive specification includes a 4.0-litre Ed Pink Racing flat-six engine outfitted with ‘big’ camshafts, a ceramic plenum exhaust manifold, and no catalytic converters. Power is transferred through a six-speed manual gearbox, while each corner features premium Brembo steel brakes with red calipers and Ohlins adjustable dampers. Both external fuel and oil filters were specified alongside a carbon fibre roof, plus seam welding of the chassis – a costly $10,000 option. Inside, carbon bucket seats are trimmed in black leather, while the cabin features a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, an early 911 gauge-set, and a Porsche Classic Navigation head unit enabled with Apple CarPlay.
In total, only 90 RHD Porsche 911s were reimagined by Singer’s Classic Services, around half of which were sold new in the UK. This car was retained by its commissioning owner for around five years and has remained in the UK ever since. Today, it presents in beautiful condition, having covered just 4,533 miles since the completion of its restoration in 2019.
The McQueen Commission is sold in partnership with Singer Vehicle Design and is therefore offered with a 12-month manufacturer warranty.
While all Singers are special, this particular car will no doubt resonate with students of Porsche history. Its totally unique specification isn’t just timeless and understated – it pays tribute to one of the marque’s most celebrated devotees, and one of the coolest 911s to ever turn a wheel. With a perfect combination of modern Singer performance and under-the-radar vintage cool, if Steve McQueen were pulling up to film at La Sarthe today, this is surely the car he would be driving.
