Launched in April 1955, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and its sibling, the Bentley S1, were recipients of the final iteration of the W.O. Bentley–designed “straight six.” With 4.9 liters, increased compression, and enlarged carburetors and intake valves, power was said to have increased by 13 percent over its 4.5-liter predecessor. The engine was paired to a GM Hydramatic automatic transmission, which Rolls-Royce built under license from 1952 to 1967 for use in Rolls-Royce and Bentley models.

For 1956 power steering and air-conditioning became available options, along with dual brake master cylinders from April production onward. The Silver Cloud I was available through Rolls-Royce as a four-door saloon or as a two-door coupe or convertible, each built by period coachbuilders. The Silver Cloud I was produced from 1955 to 1958, over which time 2,238 examples were produced.

This 1956 Silver Cloud I saloon left the factory finished in Tudor Grey over Shell Grey, separated by a Tudor Grey body molding with beige pinstripe, color-keyed Rolls-Royce wheel covers, and an interior trimmed in grey leather with grey piping and grey headliner and carpet. The Rolls-Royce was ordered through the famed Jack Barclay dealership of London for its first owner, a retired admiral in the British Royal Navy, who owned this stunning Rolls-Royce until his death.

It was subsequently shipped to Canada for resale and purchased in 1974 by the current owner. Over the course of its life, the Silver Cloud has benefitted from a repaint in its current color configuration. Additionally, the transmission has been rebuilt. Presenting beautifully today, the Silver Cloud is accompanied by its Rolls-Royce build information, tools, jack, and spare. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/am20.
