The R5 GT Turbo Group N was ideally suited to battle it out in the World Rally Championship. The 1989 season was exceptional, Alain Oreille winning the FIA Cup for Production Rally Drivers. Oreille and Thimonier's greatest feat was their outright victory on the Ivory Coast-Bandama Rally, making the R5 GT Turbo the only Group N car to have won a round of the World Rally Championship! The following year, Oreille defended his title with a new co-driver, Michel Roissard. Prepared by Simon Racing, the car worked its magic once again - winning Group N and coming 3rd overall on the 1990 Ivory Coast-Bandama Rally, and finishing 2nd in Group N on the Monte-Carlo Rally, the Tour de Corse and the Rally Argentina - and enabled Oreille to hold onto his title.
The R5 GT Turbo entered the Renault Classic Collection directly from Renault Sport in 1991 and is just as it was when it finished the 1990 Ivory Coast-Bandama Rally! Everywhere inside the car, you will find the red sand of the African tracks from 1990! The car has been recommissioned by Renault Classic's mechanics for the auction, while naturally preserving its exceptional original condition. The fuel pump, part of the fuel system, the oil pressure sensor and the fuel gauge sender have been replaced, the carburettor overhauled and the fuel tank cleaned. With 6935 km recorded, this monster of the rally stages with its international pedigree will need an engine overhaul if the buyer wants to drive it regularly. But imagine the pleasure of owning a little French car which is a 'World Champion', in such authentic and original condition!
