When at the end of the 1960s the range of both Porsche and Volkwagen was ready for replacement, both brands decided to join forces. Porsche was looking for a successor to the popular 912 and VW was looking to replace the now very outdated Karmann Ghia.

Both brands came to an agreement: Porsche took care of the development and VW took care of the production numbers, which would reduce the production costs. The 914 was born!
This 2-seater targa with middle engine was available from 1969 and was available in two engine versions: a 1.7l strong four-cylinder boxer engine – good for 80 HP and a six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 2L which delivered 110 HP. The four-pitre engine, built by Karmann, got the VW-logo although the six-cylinder engine, which was assembled in Zuffenhausen, got the Porsche coat of arms.

True to its appearance, Porsche decided to use the 6-cylinder version of the 914 in rallies and races. For this purpose the 914/6 GT was developed with a focus on weight saving, a power upgrade and some adjustments to the suspension and brakes. Capacities ranged from 160 to 210hp.

From 1971 it was possible to equip a standard 914 with option code ‘M471’ in which the car got the steel mudguard widths and track extensions of the GT.

Given the high production costs of the 914/6, its basic price was not far below that of the Porsche 911T. As a result, the sales figures were disappointing and production was discontinued from 1972 onwards at 3,381 units produced.
It was replaced by a 2.0 four-cylinder VW boxer engine, which produced 100 hp. The 1.7 saw its engine capacity and power increase to 1.8 litres and 85 hp in 1974. Production was to continue until 1976 and 115,631 locomotives were produced.

“Collection by Vermant” is very happy to be able to offer you this original Belgian delivered Porsche 914/6 GT from 1970. This is a specimen provided with its ‘matching numbers’ 2L strong 6-cylinder, good for 110 HP.
The car was newly delivered by D’ieteren Antwerpen -Antwerpse automobielmaatschappij NV in Berchem- on 24 December 1970 and was executed in colour code 2910 or ‘Zitronengelb’ with a black interior. In addition, the car was fitted with green tinted windows.

On 28 May 1975 – at a 39.280 km stand – the 914 was given the option code ‘M471’, in which the dealer installed steel mudguard extensions and track extensions. An option that was not yet available in 1970, when the car was delivered.

From the mid-1980s, the Porsche was no longer used as a daily driver and would be passed on from father to son. The ’14’ would then undergo a number of modifications in order to have a positive influence on driving behaviour.

At the end of 2009 -at a stand of 121.000km- a complete ‘nut & bolt’ restoration was started, which spared no effort. The entire car was expertly stripped, the bodywork was dismantled – sandblasted – welded where necessary and provided with a KTL treatment (electrostatic dyeing process). The next step was to apply a coat of paint in inspection code L908 – or ‘Grandprix Weiss’.

The matching numbers engine underwent a total overhaul in which a new crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, segments, distribution chains and guides, new oil pump bearings and oil pump, oil cooler,… were installed. The Cylinderheads, like the WEBER carburettors, starter motor and alternator, were also completely renewed. In addition, the matching gearbox, suspension and brakes also underwent a complete restoration. Finally, each part was meticulously overhauled and reassembled.

Meanwhile this ‘one family owner’ 914/6 GT look has walked only 1800km after restoration and the car is still in absolute new condition! The car is accompanied by its original booklets, 2nd set of keys, toolkit, a ‘birth certificate’, Certificate concerning the installation of the ‘M471’ option code, complete restoration report, Valuation report,…
