Trade-in car. The Porsche 911 succeeded the 356. Unaware they had given birth to an icon. The fact 911 was a lot more expensive than the 356 prompted Porsche to bring out a more affordable variant the next year, one fitted with the 1.6 4-cylinder engine out of the 356. Together with simpler equipment and an attractive price ticket they managed to attract new as well as old customers into taking place behind the wheel of a Zuffenhausen car. Remarkably initially more 912’s are sold compared to the 911’s.

The 912’s may have less power at its disposal than its 6-cylinder brother, the 912 still garners lots of praise. Road handling is actually better due lower weight in the back, the 912 is less impulsive when it comes to oversteer and of course the maintenance and fuel costs are a lot lower. After many years of playing second fiddle to the 911, more recently the 912 is making inroads. With its fine road handling the 4 cylinder is valued by participants of historic rallies, they love its classic appearance and are not bothered by lacking a 911’s shove in the back. By the way a 912 with 104 hp and a low curb weight of just 965 kg is still quite a nifty car.

We have a 1968 912 which indicates it falls in the Short Wheelbase category. The overall car length is no shorter but the rear wheels are placed about five centimetres towards the frontend in these early series. These SWB’s are very popular.
This 912’s bodywork is neat with a few signs it has lived a life. In the past the car received a respray. The soft-yellow paintwork in combination with the tastefully polished 15” Fuchs rims lend a fetching charm to the 912.

Those in the know will have noticed the additional gauges mounted in the dashboard. Standard the 912 missed having the two outer gauges found in a 911. The seat, rear bench and door card upholstery is very tidy as are the carpets. The dashboard top could do with replacing to have it in keeping with the rest of interior. The overall condition merits the description of being very neat and tidy and in proper drivers state. Making miles just happens to be this yellow Porsche’s favourite occupation.

The 91,000 miles on the clock is certainly not excessive. The Porsche drives very nicely and feels lively. The engine is responsive and sounds like a 4-cylinder boxer should sound. The gearbox is supple and surefooted. Everything works as intended so there are no concerns about the state of the brakes, knobs and other essential equipment. This 912 has a full car-wallet containing the requisite books. Sills, floor and bodywork are sound and rust-free.

If you are searching for a neat 912 SWB that is crying out to be driven and where enjoyment is paramount; well this 912 is the one for you!
