Description

Estimated Price: £40,000 - £50,000

The Porsche 911 needs little in the way of introduction and the signature model of the road car line up has, since 1975, always been the Turbo. Each successive generation saw the 911 Turbo become more powerful and better resolved. By the time the water-cooled 996 generation car appeared in 1999, the Turbo had become genuinely civilised; rocket ship-fast but civilised. Nonetheless however, the 996 was always bound to challenge Porsche's staunchly traditionalist fanbase with its water-cooled engine and controversial 'fried egg' headlamp design.

The succeeding 997-generation arrived in 2004 much to the delight of devoted 'Neunelfers'. Not surprisingly, given the Type 996's wholesale re-engineering, the 997 represented evolution rather than revolution, the most significant changes being to the interior and exterior styling designed to improve quality whilst retaining that car's winning blend of performance and usability. Although the Carrera models appeared in 2004, it wasn't until 2006 that the Turbo version was launched. First shown at that year's Geneva Show, it was initially offered as a coupé (and later as a cabriolet) with an impressive specification. The Mezger 3.6-litre engine was carried forward, now producing 480bhp at 6,000rpm and featuring VarioCam Plus and a pair of clever BorgWarner variable geometry turbochargers - a totally new technology for Porsche.

The UK-supplied car here is fitted with the desirable Tiptronic S option and as is the case with many modern auto boxes, Porsche's Tiptronic got the Turbo off the line quicker than the manual transmission version, the former arriving at 100km/h in 3.7 seconds compared with the latter's 3.9. Ordered through Porsche Edinburgh, the car was well optioned with the Sport Chrono Package, park-assist, telephone preparation, cruise-control and heated seats taking its purchase price to a tad over £125,000.

It's superbly presented in gleaming Cobalt Blue with a fabulous black leather interior that appears virtually unmarked and had covered 45,473 miles at the time of cataloguing. It's accompanied by the original dealer book pack, factory manuals and the service record containing details of its comprehensive service history by Porsche and Porsche specialists, the most recent being less than 1,000 miles ago.
