Bertone. Say that word out loud and something happens. It sounds like craftsmanship, like a drawing board in Turin, like a studio where men with a pencil and a cigarette shook body shapes out of their sleeves that the rest of the world only understood years later. Alfa Romeo Montreal, Lamborghini Miura, Lancia Stratos: all Bertone. And then, somewhere in the early '90s, Opel came knocking. Opel. The maker of the Kadett and the Corsa, the cars in which half of West Germany trundled off to work. And Bertone said: fine, hand us that Astra and we'll make something beautiful out of it.

What rolled out was the Astra F Cabriolet. Not just a clipped family car with a hole in the roof, but a fully Bertone-styled, Turin-built open two-door. The Italians had had their hands on it, and it shows. The line of the beltline flowing gracefully to the rear, the proportions that simply work, the way it looks almost coupé-like with the roof up. For a few quid less you could have bought an ordinary Astra back then that went exactly as fast. But then you'd have missed the point entirely.
