Originally developed by West German manufacturer NSU Motorenwerke AG as a high-performance evolution of the compact Prinz series, the NSU TT is one of motorsport’s most legendary “giant killers” of the late 1960s and 1970s. Named in honor of NSU's historic victories at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, the TT was engineered to bridge the gap between an economical daily commuter, an agile road car, and a competitive weekend racer. The TT featured a rear-mounted, air-cooled inline-four engine with an overhead camshaft—an advanced layout for a light saloon that provided instant throttle response and effortless tuneability.
Weighing under 700 kilograms in standard form and tipping the scales at around 650 kilograms in race trim, its exceptional power-to-weight ratio allowed it to out-accelerate and out-maneuver far more powerful rivals. The car’s signature boxy profile, often affectionately dubbed "the bathtub," became an unmistakable sight on European circuits, hillclimbs, and slalom courses. To manage engine heat during intense competition, drivers famously propped open the rear engine hatch, creating an iconic, aggressive silhouette that defined 1970s touring car racing. Combined with precise rack-and-pinion steering and superior traction, the TT dominated low-displacement classes and cemented its status as a grassroots racing icon.

Among these famous lightweight racers, this specific 1965 example boasts an extraordinary lineage of ownership: the history began under the care of Siegfried Spiess and his renowned tuning shop, Spiess Motorenbau, the undisputed NSU tuning experts who unlocked the full potential of the air-cooled powerplant at 132 horsepower which are delivered straight to the rear wheels.
The car was later campaigned in Norway, where its agility and speed carried its owner all the way to a Nordic Historic Touring Car Championship. Adding the ultimate chapter to its competitive provenance, the NSU TT racer subsequently went into care and ownership of Tom Kristensen, the famed Danish racing legend and record setting nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans overall winner. Christensen entered it into multiple Copenhagen Classic Grand Prix sharing the wheel with his father Carl-Erik who is well known in the Nordic racing scene himself.
Now offered for sale from the Gentleman who purchased the NSU TT from the Kristensen family, the NSU is ready to race and was last campaigned in 2024.
