Description

Estimated Price: £110,000 - £140,000

The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL needs little introduction, its elegant proportions and open-top character establishing it as one of the defining style icons of the 1950s. Introduced alongside the legendary 300 SL, it offered similar visual glamour in a more relaxed touring package and quickly became a favourite amongst the rich and famous. The 190SL also boasted an all-new engine, an over-square SOHC straight-four unit of 1,897cc that produced some 105bhp, which was sufficient to propel the car to a maximum speed of 112mph. More than 25,000 examples were produced between 1955 and 1963, but importantly, only 562 were built in right-hand-drive, making surviving examples in this configuration particularly rare.

This, beautifully presented, example has been in the current owner’s care for some 13 years, during which time it has been cherished as part of his Collection.  Acquired in need of cosmetic attention, it subsequently underwent a sympathetic programme of restoration, including a comprehensive external refinishing in Cement Grey ( Zement Grau - 186 ), a full interior retrim finished in burgundy hide, correct grey box-weave carpeting, a new matching burgundy hood and renewed chrome brightwork. Rust protection was also undertaken as part of the process to ensure longevity for years to come.

Mechanical attention included replacement differential seals and fuel pipes, together with a full service and inspection. The work is well documented within the accompanying history file, which includes photographs of the restoration and more recent maintenance invoices. The history file is further enhanced by a charming collection of period 190 SL brochures and literature, an immaculate parts catalogue and a letter from Mercedes-Benz UK confirming the car’s details.

Since completion, the 190 SL has enjoyed considerable show success, winning several trophies before being selected for display within the gallery at Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands, perhaps the ultimate accolade.

Finished in the particularly appealing combination of Cement Grey with burgundy hide and matching hood, this stylish 190 SL is a splendid example of the marque. Its rarity as a right-hand-drive example, documented restoration and impressive show history combine to make it an especially attractive proposition for the Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and collector.

Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to fully appreciate the opportunity on offer.
