Some cars write history, and some cars embody it. The Mercedes-Benz 190E, known internally as the W201, belongs firmly in that second category. In the early 1980s, Mercedes-Benz introduced this model as the compact sports saloon that had to carry nothing less than the entire reputation of the brand. The 190E quickly earned the nickname "Baby-Benz", but anyone who ever sat behind the wheel knew better: this was a full-blooded Mercedes in every respect.
Developing the 190 series cost more than 2 billion Deutsche Mark at the time, an astronomical sum for a mid-sized car. Mercedes set out to build a car that was uncompromising in quality, safety and driving feel. The result? An icon that left its mark on the tarmac of the 1980s and 1990s, and on the hearts of car enthusiasts the world over.
The 190E was also the model that carried Mercedes-Benz into the sporting arena. Think of the legendary 190E 2.3-16 that shook up the establishment during the opening race at the Nürburgring in 1984. Among others, a young Ayrton Senna showed the world his talent in a 190E, and a legend was born.
