Launched at Torino in 1966 and named after the hot North African wind, Maserati’s Ghibli was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Ghia and based on a chassis derived from the Mexico and Quattroporte models. Power was provided by a powerful DOHC V-8 initially displacing 4.7 liters and later stroked to 4.9 liters. It yielded the 174 mph Ghibli 4.9 SS – Maserati’s fastest road car. Other highlights included retractable headlamps, leather sport seats, alloy wheels with Borrani wires optional, and a ZF five-speed manual or Borg-Warner automatic gearbox. While comparable in performance to Lamborghini’s wild Miura, the Ghibli 4.9 SS was renowned for impeccable and all-around driveability, balance, and forgiving handling. Just 1,274 Ghiblis were produced.

Numbered 2372, this rare, late-production 1972 Ghibli 4.9 SS Coupe is handsomely finished in its factory-specified Oro Kelso paint over black leather upholstery. According to factory records sourced through Maserati Classiche, this Ghibli was built during July 1972 and, in addition to its striking livery, original features included power steering, an adjustable steering column with anti-theft lock, tinted glass, power windows, reclining seats with headrests, a heated rear window, a clock, and air-conditioning. Confirmed by the Certificate of Origin, the chassis, engine, and body numbers remain as the car left the factory when new. Additional Maserati Classiche documents include the final tests data sheet, technical and aesthetic characteristics, end-of-line data sheet, and delivery note confirming that this 4.9 SS was shipped on July 25, 1972, to Grossman Motor Cars Corp., the West Nyack, New York, sports car dealership of well-known American sports car racer Bob Grossman.

According to a copy of the original Bill of Sale, the Ghibli was sold by Grossman Motor Cars at 22 recorded miles to its first owner, Easy Street Fashions, located on Broadway in New York City, with a 1971 Jaguar XKE taken in on trade. Subsequently, the Ghibli remained in the New York area under original ownership until 2011, and today it retains a period East Hampton parking permit on the driver’s side rear-quarter window.

Following acquisition by the second owner, the Maserati was shipped to Italy where it received a no-expense-spared restoration, returning the car to its spectacular as-delivered appearance.
