The History of the Maserati 3500 Gti
In the mid-1950s, the "economic boom" of the next decade began to take a shape. Thus it was that Omero Orsi, Patron of Maserati at the time, sniffed the unborn luxury Granturismo market with all-Emilian sagacity, investing resources and energy in an innovative car model by class and engine capacity.
In 1956 the chief designer of the House of the “Tridente”, Giulio Alfieri, began to work on the engine that was derived from the twin-shaft 6-cylinder in-line of the 350S competition.
In 1959, disc brakes on the front and limited slip differential were offered as options, accessories that became standard the following year.
In the same year the engine was redesigned to achieve 230 HP, thanks to a new cylinder head cooling system, new Weber 42 DCOE2 carburettors and newly designed Borgo pistons.
During the second half of 1961 the indirect injection “Lucas” replaced the Weber carburettors bringing the power to 235 HP and finally a new ZF 5-speed gearbox was fitted as standard.
The bodywork was updated, the roof line was slightly lowered, the grille, the front and rear lights and the doors were also redesigned.
Rear disc brakes and power brakes were only introduced in 1962.
The new car had to have a higher rank and combine the sportiness, typical of the Modenese brand, with the needs of luxury and comfort, moreover it had to allow high averages in long journeys on the motorway, without tiring the driver and passengers.
The cockpit had to be comfortable, the handling was safe and within reach of all types of customers, without necessarily being experienced drivers.
The interior fittings and finishes had to be of high quality, in order not to disappoint the most demanding customers, the mechanics reliable and suitable for sports performances.
With these premises, the 3500 GT with the code Type 101, the first Maserati built on a large scale, was born.
