Description

Estimated Price: £22,000 - £26,000

When Jaguar introduced the XK8 in 1996, its flowing lines and new V8 engine marked a significant change from the long-serving XJS. The design recalled elements of the marque’s earlier sports cars whilst offering the comfort, refinement and effortless performance expected of a modern Jaguar grand tourer. The subsequent arrival of the supercharged XKR gave that elegant shape rather more serious intent, establishing a combination that remained compelling throughout the model’s production life.

Continual development ensured that the final cars were considerably more accomplished than their predecessors. A major revision in 2002 brought an increase in engine capacity from 4.0 to 4.2 litres, with the supercharged XKR now producing 400bhp and benefiting from a six-speed automatic transmission. The result was a car equally suited to covering long distances with little apparent effort or delivering the forceful acceleration suggested by its bonnet vents and discreet R badging.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2005 for the 2006 model year, the 4.2-S provided a fitting finale to the first-generation XK. Available in both naturally aspirated XK8 4.2 S and supercharged XKR 4.2S forms, it brought together additional equipment and distinctive detailing as the model approached its replacement by the aluminium-bodied X150.

Technically speaking, the 4.2 S was marketed by Jaguar as a "Special Edition" run-out model rather than a strictly numbered, batch-limited edition, however, because it was introduced in March 2005 solely to keep the 9-year-old platform desirable before the assembly lines were permanently shut down in May 2006, its production window was hard-limited by time. Because of the brief production window, global numbers for the XKR version are incredibly low. Expert estimates and register data frequently point to just 200 global examples for the premium XKR 4.2 S "White Badge" variants, with only a fraction built as Coupés.

The XKR 4.2 S' specification included 20-inch BBS Perseus split-rim alloy wheels, cross-drilled Brembo brake discs and red brake callipers. A white-faced Growler bonnet badge with chequered accents gave rise to the familiar ‘White Badge’ description, whilst further details included chequered-flag door treadplates, leather-edged floor mats and darker rear lamp clusters. Frost Blue Metallic was one of the four brand-new, exclusive metallic paint colours created specifically for this special edition Jaguar matched with specific interior upgrades unique to the 4.2 S

Registered in 2006, the example offered presents in Frost Blue Metallic with heated Magnolia leather sports seats. At the time of cataloguing, it has covered just over 15,000 miles, reflecting the limited use described by its vendor. Reportedly carefully cared for throughout its life, it is described as presenting exceptionally well, with its condition being a particular attraction alongside its low mileage and final-series status.

Beyond the bespoke specification, much of the XKR’s appeal lies in the way it delivers its performance. The supercharged V8 provides a substantial reserve of power, accompanied by a distinctive mechanical soundtrack, whilst the automatic transmission and Jaguar’s CATS adaptive suspension help retain the relaxed character central to the model’s identity. It remains a grand tourer with the ability to make an ordinary journey feel rather more special.

The 2006 Jaguar XKR 4.2 S "White Badge" Coupé represents the absolute pinnacle and final "run-out" edition of the original first-generation X100 Jaguar XK series. For collectors drawn to the first-generation XK’s proportions and traditional cabin, the 4.2-S offers an appealing culmination of the design. This lightly used example combines the desirable supercharged drivetrain with a distinctive colour scheme and the detailing that sets these rare final cars apart.
