In 1954, Jaguar introduced a new model designated XK 140. Intended to replace the XK 120 as the Coventry marque’s flagship open-top roadster, it brought with it increased interior space, improved brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, greater suspension travel, and telescopic shock absorbers to replace the older lever-arm setup. Over the three years it was produced, the XK 140 was a success, with almost 9,000 units sold; to this day is a coveted collector car.

The Roadster, or Open Two-Seater (OTS), offered here was originally delivered by Jaguar Cars of New York, with the date of dispatch 11 October 1956. The accompanying Jaguar Heritage Trust production record trace certificate notes the original color scheme as being Arbour Green over Biscuit, a striking combination. Further, the vehicle was optioned to “MC” specification. Known in Europe as the Special Equipment or SE model, these cars featured the cylinder head developed for the C-Type with larger SU carburetors, as well as dual exhaust with two separate mufflers, wire wheels, and Lucas fog lights. Offering 210 horsepower, it was the most powerful stock roadgoing XK 140 available. Most importantly, this XK 140 possesses matching-numbers engine block, cylinder head, and body as shown on the JDHT certificate. The vehicle is additionally fitted with an overdrive unit.

Restored by Doc’s Jags in Arizona, reportedly with the intention of running the Mille Miglia, this roadster sports a number of rally-focused modifications: The driver now sits within period-style bucket seats with contrast piping behind Brooklands screens and a safer padded wheel. In lieu of a convertible top, the car is accompanied by a purposeful, custom-fitted tonneau cover. The exterior features auxiliary yellow Lucas lamps and the front bumper has been removed for a dramatic and sporty look. Disc brakes have been fitted to all four corners, and the engine exhausts through stainless steel tubing. Completing the package are attractive Borrani wire wheels shod in Blockley tires.

Eligible for many of the world’s premier tours and rallies, this Jaguar XK 140 MC Roadster is accompanied a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust production record trace certificate copy, a FIVA ID card, and a bill of lading. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/az22.
